About Light from a Stranger
Light from a Stranger are a Sydney-based rock-rap duo known for fusing explosive live energy with sharp lyricism and infectious hooks. Blending the sing-along power of rock with the grit, rhythm and attitude of hip hop, their sound sits somewhere between rap concert, rock show and block party—high-energy, thought-provoking and built to move crowds.
The duo consists of Sydney-born rapper, producer and multi-instrumentalist MC Connect and Canadian-native vocalist, beatboxer and performer Jyder. Writing and producing much of their music out of Western Sydney, the pair combine Connect’s hip-hop production roots with Jyder’s dynamic vocal delivery and rhythmic beatboxing to create a distinctive hybrid sound that crosses genres and audiences.
Light from a Stranger first formed in 2018 and quickly built momentum with their debut EP Grey Area in 2019. Their striking one-shot music video for Not About Me, filmed hundreds of metres above Parramatta CBD, helped establish the duo as an exciting new presence in Sydney’s independent music scene. Riding the buzz from their early releases, the group expanded to a full live band and prepared for a run of larger shows before the COVID-19 pandemic abruptly halted their momentum and forced the cancellation of their touring plans.
After several years away from performing, Light from a Stranger have reunited with renewed energy and purpose. The duo return with The Lost EP, a collection of rediscovered recordings and unfinished ideas revived from their earlier sessions and brought to life with fresh perspective. The project marks both a comeback and a continuation of the band’s original vision—raw, genre-blending music that hits as hard emotionally as it does live.
With influences spanning hip hop, rock and soul across Australia and North America, Light from a Stranger deliver music that is powerful, melodic and unapologetically bold. Whether on stage or in the studio, their mission remains simple: create music that connects, energises and leaves audiences wanting more.
